Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory (GRMH-GDL) and the Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (iTERM) under the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) established the Joint Center for Musculoskeletal Research, and the signing ceremony was held in Hong Kong on 8 November.
The joint research center will be located in GRMH-GDL who will provide funds for its construction and operations. The center will focus on basic research in musculoskeletal system, mainly targeting at orthopedic injuries and diseases such as osteoporosis, nonunion, multiple myeloma, bone metastasis, rare bone diseases, osteoarthritis and tendonitis.
Based on in-depth pathophysiological study of the above orthopedic diseases, the joint research center will identify new targets for drug discovery, and with the assistance from computers design new drugs such as biopharmaceuticals, cell and cell products, and small-molecule drugs.
According to the introduction, the joint research center is positioned as a world-class scientific research center, aiming to become an important part of the world-class science and technology innovation center in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA). The CUHK will be deeply involved in the construction of GRMH-GDL, providing a new platform for scientific and technological cooperation in the GBA.
At the ceremony, Prof. Duanqing Pei, legal representative and Executive Deputy Director of GRMH-GDL, and Prof. Wai-yee Chan, Director of the iTERM of CUHK, signed the agreeement on behalf of the two sides respectively. President of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Prof. Chunli Bai and President of CUHK, Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, witnessed the signing process.
